Steve Jester is the founder, owner, and creative director of Public Barber Salon, an independent San Francisco barber salon he opened in 2008. A working barber and stylist, Steve Jester continues to serve clients behind the chair while overseeing the business and creative direction of Public Barber Salon’s two locations.
Steve founded Public to combine the relaxed culture of a neighborhood barbershop with the personalized service, craftsmanship, and long-term stylist relationships of a salon. From the beginning, however, his vision extended beyond hair.
An artist, surfer, designer, and collector, Steve personally shaped each Public location. He sourced vintage barber chairs, reclaimed fixtures, artwork, books, antique furniture, and architectural pieces, often restoring or repurposing finds himself.
Public Barber Salon has also provided a space for local artists and independent grooming brands, reflecting Steve’s connection to San Francisco’s creative community.
More than fifteen years after opening Public, Steve remains both a small business owner and practicing stylist. His approach continues to bring together craftsmanship, thoughtful design, hospitality, individuality, and lasting relationships
